Bipolar Disorder and History |
Bipolar disorder is when a person has drastic changes of mood, from depression to manic and manic to depression. The symptoms of bipolar disorder can be hyperactiviry, no sleep, ecstatic, depression, extreme happines, low self esteem, the symptoms will depend on what kind of episode he is experiencing, depression or maniac.
The words depression and mania have Ancient Greek etymologies. The chinese authors were the first to decribe a Bipolar Disorder as a mental illness. Jules Bailarger in 1854 to the French Academy of Medicine describe a biphasic mental illness that caused changes between mania and depression.
A german psychiatrist Emil Draepelin is considered to be the father of modern conceptualization of bipolar disorder. He studied the natural course of untreated bipolar disorder patients, a lot of time before it was discovered the mood stabilizers. In 1902 he described these patients with the term "manic depressive psychosis".
Psychiatrist Dr John Cade investigated the effect of different compunds on patients with manic depressive psychosis. This doctor discovered that Lithium Carbonate can could be used as a treatment for manic depressive psychosis successfuly, which was the first drug successfuly used.
These is some of the history of bipolar disorder, since then bipolar disorder has been studied and investigated a lot, some of the drugs discovered useful at that time are still used successfuly today.
Remember that a bipolar disorder has to effect depression and manic. There are other drugs that can be use to treat depression and reduce its effect.
