When a child experience ups and downs in mood like depression one day and mania on other day he might have a bipolar disorder. However, it can be tricky to identify if a child has bipolar disorder or other mental disorder like ADHD with similar symptoms.
Children with bipolar disorder will feel one day ecstatic, happy, full of ideas, feeling very confident and possibly make dangerous activities. Those are the symptoms of mania, but if your child has some of those symptoms you need to go with your doctor so he can make a proper diagnosis.

One common symptom in adults with bipolar disorder is hallucinations and delusions, so this can also happen to a child, but might not be easy to know it, if he dont tell you anything you wont know and if he tell you about his hallucinations you might believe that he is playing or just joking.
So proper treatment for a child is required, dont assume anything, if you see that your child has depression or you see that you child is acting completely different than normal, he might need help and with children you can not take any chances, they dont know the risks and you can help him on time.
Usual treatments are psychiatric help and some type of durgs that help decrease the depression or symptoms. Another way to help the child is to learn to recognize when an episode of depression or mania will happen, if you can recognize the symptoms with him it will be easier to treat the problem and avoid dangers before they happen.
